| Personal History | Born "Shaani, Property of Krashk" on the lowest rung of Orion's slave society, Shaani had a rough childhood. While she avoided many of the uncomfortable aspects of life as an Orion slave girl, as she had neither the aptitude nor the base cunning to rise very far in their society. Much of her early childhood was spent doing simple chores on a large manor estate owned by a wealthy former pirate. She was considered by some of her peers to lack social skills. Caught sneaking into the library to read multiple times, her master sent her off to receive a formal education, which she excelled at. She earned an Orion medical degree at a very young age*, thus raising her status as she had become a more valuable slave. (*not officially recognized in the Federation due to differing standards and the lack of a Hippocratic equivalent "do no harm" oath) As a young woman, she chanced to meet a Vulcan Starfleet officer named Sutan, who recognized her potential and arranged to purchase her freedom. In gratitude, she chose to attend Starfeet Academy, taking a medical equivalence course to finish her degree in her first year, while transferring to the science department afterward. |

| Service Record | Shaani was noted for her acumen as a scholar at her time at the Academy, but also had some noted professional problems. Due to her upbringing, she viewed some of Starfleet's standards and general research practices as overly conservative. While her inventiveness was praised by several instructors, she seemed to have problems figuring out where to stop. She was once given a black mark for submitting a paper on the potential applications of timeline alteration that were found to fall short of Starfleet's ethical standards, as they included a section on the possible military applications of time travel (a subject Starfleet frowns upon, particularly when the research is done by cadets). She also had a very difficult time adopting to life on Earth and human society. She was diagnosed with clinical depression after her homeworld was abandoned, and gave up on relationships entirely after several disastrous tries. Upon receiving the rank of Ensign, she first served upon the USS Saturn (Galaxy-Class), and the USS Redeemer (Intrepid-class), before accepting a long-term assignment to the USS Feynman, a Hope-class science ship, where her record again points to her as an inventive officer with a difficult personal life. She was noted to have difficulties in assignments that would put her in opposition to other Orions. She received citations for bravery, however, when dealing with a radiation burst during a close-orbit study of a decaying star, in which her quick action prevented an entire deck from being flooded with lethal amounts of radiation. As a Lieutenant Commander, she took command of the ship following action against Reman pirates, during which the ship's bridge was struck with a torpedo, but the ship itself was saved through her quick thinking. Fast-tracked to Captain, she served aboard the Feynman until after the Battle of Vega. -TF 47- Following |
