Personality & Traits

General Overview By all means an 'old school' Romulan and former member of the Tal Shiar, Commander Val'aill is often regarded as a somewhat bitter if implacable and loyal member of the New Romulan Republic who has come to despise what remains of the Star Empire and the Tal Shiar.
Strengths & Weaknesses She is known to be quite insightful and resourceful, able to keep a cool head even in the most dire circumstances. Pragmatic as they come in combat, Jorna is never afraid to get her hands dirty or improvise to overcome overwhelming odds. It is because of this that she is most valuable on the bridge of a warbird engaged in heavy battle, finding herself lacking if required to deal with daily and petty occurences that rarely, if ever, require a military solution. Her diplomatic skills are almost non-existent and decades as a Tal Shiar officer have not improved her manners and rather unpleasant sense of humour. That said, her experience in the fields of combat and intelligence are, without a doubt, her most notable qualities and Val'aill can be a remarkable asset if one if willing to overlook her lack of social graces.
Ambitions As with most Romulans, Commander Jorna Val'aill is not prone, to put it mildly, to share her dreams, goals or anything that might be considered personal or private, but she seems relatively content in her post. She appears to be nothing if not dutiful and her adamant defense of D'Tan's ideals and beliefs speaks volumes of where her allegiance lies. Indeed, for she has gone beyond the call of duty to defend the infant Republic from those that would see it destroyed and if her actions and scarce words are any indiciation, she has no intention of going anywhere.
Hobbies & Interests Jorna's secretive nature makes it almost impossible for anyone but her most trusted officers to get close to her and is therefore seen as a rather aloof individual. Those fortunate enough to have seen her ready room or her quarters, however, claim that she has a fondness for all things green and that a terrarium of considerable size can be found in the latter, though the fact that not all in it remains still might hint that she is also fond of something other than exotic flora.

Personal History Val'aill was born on Romulus in the year 2345, the daughter of a chief engineer and a prominent Subcommander of the Imperial military. Always eager to fight for the Empire from a very early age, she decided to join the Tal Shiar against the wishes of her parents, with whom she would eventually cut all ties.

Witnessing most closest comrades fall victim to a Klingon ambush early in her life stirred a hatred within her towards their forsworn enemies that only fueled her resolve further, becoming a patriot and a zealot at heart. Though most of her past is a mystery at best, it is known that she served as a naive Centurion during the Dominion War and that she had reached the rank of Subcommander by the time of Shinzon’s ascension, her accomplishments secretly guarded by the shadowy organization she served. The destruction of the homeworld struck a hidden cord in her, her dreams and very core shattered by the sudden and unnecessary tragedy, an event which would open her eyes.

Jorna forced herself to believe that the military and the Tal Shiar would restore peace and order and eventually revive their once glorious nation from the ashes, but her attempts at convincing herself of such a lie soon proved in vain and only delayed the realisation that had been in her mind all along, dormant. Val’aill was nothing if not pragmatic, however, and she never hesitated to employ mercenaries or even try to salvage Borg technology as long as it was for the good of the Empire.

She was a firm believer that the end always justified the means, no matter the cost, even if she had not always been fond of the constant oppression, tension and competition that did naught but create a society of cold, secretive strangers and went as far as to quietly question the wisdom behind the Empire's treatment of other powers in the quadrant. In spite of this, Jorna could not bear to betray the chain of command and continued to serve the Tal Shiar until it became far too obvious that the protection of the Romulan people was no longer their objective.

Already a Commander when the Khitomer Accords were dissolved and abandoned, she soon realised that the end was growing more and more distant, the means more grotesque and the cost highest than even a veteran officer like her could have anticipated or accepted. She became restless and a feeling of uneasiness crept inside her, she could not help but feel betrayed and alone. It was then that she confided all fears and concerns to the few Tal Shiar comrades that she trusted – an unprecedented and dangerous display of trust to be sure, but one that would mark the beginning of a new journey.

Disappointed by the constant bickering and inner struggles and disputes between the nobility, the lack of action from the military and the monstrous deeds committed by her own peers, she gathered all the soldiers and officers under her command that shared her sorrow and left. She accused all that claimed to be true Romulans to have betrayed their race and nation and to be the cause of the current pathetic state of the Empire, declared it dead and fled to D'Tan’s fledging movement.

Known to have been hesitant and skeptical at first, Jorna would eventually see eye to eye with the idealistic man that would become the leader of Mol’Rihan and do all in her power to ensure that her broken people, Romulans and Remans, not only have a chance to regain their pride and their lives, but found a Mol’Rihan based on unity and strength and tempered with tolerance and acceptance, never fear and oppression.
